Puttanesca Sauce made with fresh tomatoes and all the wonderful Mediterranean flavours of olives, capers, anchovies and spicy red pepper heat. Pasta perfection!! Perfect for meatless or gluten-free diners!!
When my husband says he wants to make dinner….he doesn’t have to tell me twice…GREAT! I’m one of those old fashioned girls that LOVES when her man cooks for her. That is when I gladly switch up the roles…I will do the dishes instead.
One thing he loves to cook is pasta. Awesome since I happen to LOVE pasta. Wine, pasta and garlic bread, I can eat this over and over again. I will admit I do love sipping on my wine watching him cook away in the kitchen. Listening to some nice music, taking in all the wonderful aromas, anticipating the wonderful meal that is coming my way. Still something romantic about a guy cooking for his girl…in my opinion anyway. Even though we have been married for almost 38 years…I love it each time it happens.
Since the market season is in full swing, getting your hands on some awesome fresh ingredients is so easy. I will be so sad when winter gets here and I will have to rely on the grocery store produce. Nothing beats market/garden fresh that’s for sure.
During our visit, we picked up some fresh tomatoes. Although the recipe calls for canned he decided on the “fresh is best” philosophy to make this totally awesome Puttanesca sauce. Mediterranean Canned Tuna Pasta Toss is another great way to use fresh tomatoes.
One of our favourite stores is Williams Sonoma and recently we added some wonderful cookbooks to our (or I should say my) massive collection. Williams Sonoma PASTA NIGHT is where he got the inspiration to make Fresh Tomato Puttanesca Sauce. We truly love all those simple and wonderful Mediterranean ingredients that go into this sauce. It’s quick, easy but the taste is like you were cooking all day long. Basically, you chop, sauté/cook and eat!!
He started with fresh tomatoes (he chopped them in the blender). Black olives, capers, garlic, anchovy paste, red pepper flakes, olive oil, and black pepper. I can smell the goodness just by typing these words. You really have to love the simplicity of this sauce…but the taste is so full of flavour. This is a wonderful GLUTEN FREE meal. We served our over gluten free pasta!! Superb!!
Next time you want a quick and oh so yummy pasta sauce, this Fresh Tomato Puttanesca Sauce will quickly become one of your favourite “go to” sauces to make….it certainly is one or ours….or should I say HIS!! Like I have said time and again, it doesn’t have to be complicated to be good…simple can be great.

Fresh Tomato Puttanesca Sauce
- 29-30 oz Fresh tomatoes (chopped)
- 2/3 cups Kalamata olives (pitted and chopped)
- 1/3 cup capers
- 1 tbsp Anchovy paste
- 4 cloves garlic (chopped)
- 1/2 tsp Red pepper flakes
- Olive oil (for cooking)
- Black pepper (to season)
- Chop tomatoes (by hand or using a blender)
- Chop garlic
- Pit and chop olives
- Drain capers
- Heat olive oil in a heavy bottomed pan
- Sauté garlic, red pepper flakes and anchovy paste for about 3 minutes
- Add tomatoes, capers and olives
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes
- Season with black pepper
- Toss with your favourite pasta and ENJOY!!
