Are you a latte lover? This homemade Pumpkin Latte uses natural ingredients. Real pumpkin puree and a homemade spice blend. No artificial flavouring here.

Use the rest of the puree to make these delicious Puff Pasty Pumpkin Rolls and Overnight Pumpkin Oats.

Pumpkin latte made with real pumpkin puree.

Crafting this delicious pumpkin spice latte from scratch is easy. No fancy equipment is needed. This is better than Starbucks.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Starbucks fan. Since I love lattes so much, I had to figure out how not to break the bank. This way I can save and enjoy delicious lattes anytime I want!

Embrace the fall and winter with this seasonal pumpkin latte. Warm, cozy and so delicious. Pair it with a pumpkin donut, or alongside a bowl of apple pudding. How about a nice slice of pumpkin spice coffee cake? So many tasty options to choose from.

I am ready for all the pumpkin recipes. The soups, casseroles, and chilis. Of course, pumpkin pie is a must during the holidays. I bet you never thought of using pumpkin puree in coffee.

    Pumpkin Coffee Ingredients

    • pumpkin puree
    • pumpkin spice
    • agave nectar
    • strong brewed coffee
    • milk
    • cinnamon sugar (for topping the foam)

Artificial flavours will not cut it for me. This recipe uses canned pumpkin and homemade pumpkin spice. I use the recipe mix from Food Network. Also known as pumpkin pie spice, it is a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cloves.

I don’t have a fancy espresso machine, do you? No worries, don’t let that stop you from making homemade lattes. It’s easier than you think.

How To Make The Best Homemade Pumpkin Latte

All you need is strong coffee, hot milk, and a handheld frother. I have been doing it this way for years. It works great. Full instructions are in the recipe card below.

To heat the milk you can use a pot on the stove, or even a microwave if you prefer. A handheld milk frother does an excellent job of creating lots of thick foam for topping your drinks.

Warmed and frothed milk ready for making lattes.

Make some strong coffee, or if you have espresso use that. I have even used instant espresso and it works great. I know you may think instant coffee sucks, but the espresso does a great job here.

Feel free to use any type of milk you wish, I used 1%. Non-dairy options work too.

Mix some canned pumpkin with the spice mix. I used some agave to sweeten it, but go ahead and use honey or sugar if you like.

Mix the pumpkin into the hot coffee (no it won’t be lumpy), add the hot milk, top with foam, sprinkle on some cinnamon sugar for topping, and there you have it.

See, told you it was easy. Now if I could only figure out latte art.

    Substitutions/Recipe Tips

    • Milk – I used 1% dairy in this recipe. You can use full-fat, skim or even dairy-free. We love barista oat milk in homemade lattes.
    • Pumpkin Puree – I used canned. Homemade puree would be great as well.
    • Sweetener – Agave nectar was my choice. Feel free to use honey, maple syrup, maple sugar, or regular sugar. You may even choose to add no sweetener at all.
    • Spice Blend – I always have a batch of homemade pumpkin spice blend on hand. You can easily buy it as well.
    • Coffee – Any strong coffee will work in this DIY latte recipe. Instant espresso is super easy to work with. Got some extra cold brew around? Heat it up!
    • Toppings – Cinnamon sugar is a treat. Just plain cinnamon works. Nutmeg is another great choice. Maple sugar, vanilla sugar, or raw sugar are great options.

You are probably wondering what you do with all the canned pumpkin that is left over. If you are not going to use it in a delicious recipe, the next best thing is to freeze it!

Put enough in little freezer bags for a few lattes. Pull it out whenever you want to make a drink. Thaw it under hot water, or pop it into the microwave for a few seconds (after you put it in a glass bowl, not a plastic bag).

What is the best milk for making lattes with foam?
    • Whole dairy milk works best. It seems to have the optimal balance of fat, protein, sugar, and water. Perfect for thick creamy foam.
    • Almond milk seems to be the top pick for a non-dairy version. Latte art may be a little more difficult, but the foam is thick and sweet.
    • Oat milk is another great choice. The foam disappears a little faster, but it is smooth creamy, and easy to work with.
    • Soy milk makes a creamy, dense foam, but not great for latte art.

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin
    • 1 teaspoons pumpkin spice
    • 1 ½ tablespoons agave nectar
    • 2 cups strong coffee
    • 1 cup milk ( I used 1%) (your choice, dairy or non-dairy, non fat to full fat)
    • cinnamon sugar for topping (optional)
    US Customary – Metric

    Instructions

    • Place pumpkin in a small glass bowl.
      2 tablespoons canned pumpkin
    • Add the pumpkin spice mix and agave. Mix well.
1 teaspoons pumpkin spice, 1 ½ tablespoons agave nectar
    • Warm slightly in microwave to remove the chill (this way it won’t cool your coffee down too much).
    • Make your strong coffee. This is where you can experiment with your coffee to milk ratio. We prefer 2:1 (2 parts coffee 1 part milk)
      2 cups strong coffee
    • Heat the milk (either on the stove in a pot, or in the microwave).
      1 cup milk ( I used 1%)
    • Using a hand frother, froth the milk.
    • Put the coffee in a mug and add the pumpkin mixture. Stir well.
    • Add the heated milk and stir.
    • Top with the foam.
    • Add the cinnamon sugar topping.

    Notes

Feel free to experiment with the coffee:milk ratio. Use any milk you choose. Sometimes the non-dairy does not froth as nicely.
You can also use honey or sugar to sweeten.
Leftover pumpkin can be frozen for later use. Just put it in small plastic bags and thaw when needed.
