Mini potatoes (or baby potatoes) are so cute. These potato bites were inspired by my Warm Potato Salad recipe. Smoked salmon and dill pair so well together, creating yet another delicious potato dish with this combination was so much fun.
Fish and potatoes make such a great match. Fish and chips are a hit. Have you tried my fish cakes recipe? Perfect as an appetizer or main dish.
Instead of fries with your fish cakes, switch things up and serve Crispy Cast Iron Skillet Potatoes instead.
Love seafood chowder? This Slow Cooker Creamy Fish Soup is always a welcome any night of the week.
What Do You Need For These Smoked Salmon Appetizers?
I LOVE when recipes are easy to make and require minimal ingredients. These potato bites are just that. You will need:
- mini potatoes
- smoked salmon
- olive oil
- salt & pepper
- dried dill
- fresh dill
- sour cream
When it comes to entertaining, the easier the better. I like to spend time with my guests, not get stuck in the kitchen. Delicious foods don’t have to be complicated. In fact, I find the simpler the better.
Baked potatoes with sour cream is another love of mine. I also happen to love loaded potato skins. In fact, I do not know of one single potato dish I don’t love.
The more potato recipes in my life the better. That reminds me, my kids have been nagging me to make my mom’s potato soup recipe. They just might be in luck. We are in the comfort food season right now.
How To Make Potato And Salmon Bites
Let’s get this party started. This mini baked potato recipe is super easy.
- wash the potatoes
- bake with olive oil and seasonings until done
- combine fresh dill and sour cream in a bowl
- slice the smoked salmon into thin strips
- cut the baked potatoes in half
- top with salmon pieces
- skewer into place
- serve with dill dip
- DONE!
Super easy right? Told you! You can be finishing off this tasty appetizer as your guests are walking in the door.
You can even leave a few potatoes on their own, for the people that might not like salmon. Potatoes dipped in sour cream and dill still make GREAT potato appetizers.
Can You Eat Smoked Salmon At Room Temperature?
Yes, but you should not leave it out for hours. I would not leave it out in the hot weather for very long. It won’t spoil if is sits at room temperature for up to an hour. Always store it in the fridge.
How To Serve Smoked Salmon
There are so many ways to enjoy this delicious fish. Here are a few suggestions:
Salmon with cream cheese makes a great bagel topping. Perfect for brunch, lunch and dinner too.
Smoked salmon with cucumbers is the perfect light and healthy salad option. Have you ever tried cucumber noodles? So fun.
Another great appetizer idea is stuffed cucumbers. Perfect for bbq parties all summer long.
If you love tacos, then these egg tacos are for you. Great for any meal of the day.
If you are a Jamie Oliver fan, give this easy salmon plate a try. Made in minutes. Faster than takeout and much healthier too.

I agree entertaining should be stress-free. These appetizers would be perfect to serve guests and they are so easy to make too. I bet they were gone instantly. We love anything with salmon or potatoes.
Homemade & Yummy
Oh yes, these disappear in a flash. Make lots. I have trouble not eating them as I assemble them for the guests.
Dana
Omg. Okay. First of all, I am obsessed with smoked salmon. Pairing it with dilly flavor is a classic move, but with potatoes too! That is so innovative. I’ve never seen anything like this. I usually find potatoes to mask a lot of other flavors because they’re so hearty and starchy, but smoked salmon—as delicate as it is—does a great job at standing out with it’s crave-worthy smokiness.
I need smoked salmon. Stat. 🙂
Homemade & Yummy
HAHHA…my neighbour has already said she is making these for 2 upcoming parties.
Jolina
I agree, entertaining SHOULD be easy. We’re guilty of stressing out though. But lately we’ve learned to chill out a little bit. Just a little lol. These apps look so good! I bet these would be the first to disappear.
Homemade & Yummy
Well I have a hard time not eating them all as I assemble them for the guests. They do not last long that is for sure.
Lisa
You’ve essentially put all of my favorite things into one tempting bite. I love the crispy skin you’ve gotten on the potatoes and the salmon looks positively luscious. Also, kudos for not making it overly complex in the assembly — having the sour cream as a dip instead of delicately balancing it on each individual hors d’oeuvre is sheer genius. This would be great for our next cocktail party. Thank you!
Homemade & Yummy
I know your guest will love them. I have a hard time not eating them all as I assemble them. As for the dip on the side….so good. Your guests can decide how much they want. I always take lots.
