What Is Muesli?
Developed by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner, muesli is a cold oatmeal dish consisting of rolled oats, other grains, nuts, and seeds. Also known as Bircher muesli, Swiss muesli, or Swiss oatmeal.
Usually eaten for breakfast, it is soaked in a liquid to soften before eating. You can use milk (dairy or non-dairy), or even juice. It usually contains less sugar than other cereals, lots of fibre, and antioxidants and even contains superfoods.
It works well as a topper on Mocha Coffee Yogurt too.
Preparing This Homemade Muesli Recipe
Using a basic ratio of 4 parts grain, 1 part nuts/seeds and 1 part dried fruit, you will have a batch of the best muesli mix in a matter of minutes.
- measure all ingredients into a large bowl.
- mix thoroughly ( I like to use my hands for this).
- store in an air-tight container until ready to use.
How simple is that? You can customize this basic ratio however you like. Continue reading for some great tips and suggestions below.
Suggestions/Recipe Tips
- Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free oats and grains
- Best oats for making muesli? I like to use old-fashioned or large flake oats. Steel-cut oats can be used, but you will have to soak them longer before eating.
- You can change the basic ratio to suit your preference. This is one of those recipes that you cannot mess up.
- Dried fruit adds the sweet element, so if you are looking to cut down on sugar just adjust the amount you add.
- This lasts for a long time stored in a cool place.
- Top it with fresh fruit
Toasting Oats, Grains, and Nuts
You can easily toast your ingredients by following these simple steps:
- Preheat your oven to 350º F
- Spread oats or nuts (or a combination of oats, grain, and nuts) onto a baking sheet in a thin layer
- Bake for about 10 minutes, stirring often so they don’t burn
- They are ready when they have a slight tan colour and a nice nutty aroma
- Cool before using
What are some great things to add to the basic mix?
- raisins
- cranberries
- blueberries
- apricots
- cherries
- figs
- currents
- dried apples
- dried bananas
- goji berries
- raw dried coconut
- powdered milk
- nuts
- seeds
FAQs
Granola is baked with added sweetener and oil and has a very crunchy texture. Large chunks can be broken apart. Muesli is not baked. It has a dry flaky texture, just like oatmeal. Generally, it is not overly sweet.
That is a personal preference. Some people like to soak it overnight, others will soak it for only a few minutes. Experiment and find which way you like best.
Yes, I like to use it as a topper for yogurt.
I have never tried it this way, but people have cooked it just like you would any oatmeal.
Stored correctly, homemade muesli blend will last for a couple of months or more.

I make myself a huge bowl of muesli pretty often just because I can’t live without it. I am happy to see I am not the only one! And the best part is that you can make it a different dish every time – just change the ingredients!
Homemade & Yummy
Isn’t it great when the simple things in life are so delicious.

What a gorgeous recipe…and I could not agree more about “store bought” granola being a thing of the past. I’ve made mine for the past few years and prefer it over any I’ve ever bought. I must say though, mine does not have barley, spelt, and kamut going on. What an excellent choice of grains to ramp up the nutritious breakfast all week. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Homemade & Yummy
You are welcome. Have fun creating you own blend.

I also grew up eating Alpen! However I ‘ve never made my own muesli, which is silly really given that it’s so easy and I’m sure healthier too! Def should give it a go!

You can create the combination you LOVE…and will want to eat each morning.
