    Basic Muesli Cereal Ingredients

This homemade muesli recipe is just a starting point. You can customize it just the way you like. Mix and match the ingredients and have a different blend every time.

    • old fashioned oats
    • barley flakes
    • spelt flakes
    • kamut flakes
    • toasted wheat germ
    • sliced almonds
    • chopped dates
    Ingredients to make homemade muesli.

Have you ever wondered what the heck muesli is? Developed by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner, muesli is a cold oatmeal dish consisting of rolled oats, other grains, nuts, and seeds. Also known as Bircher muesli, Swiss muesli, or Swiss oatmeal.

Usually eaten for breakfast, it is soaked in a liquid to soften before eating. You can use milk (dairy or non-dairy), or even juice. It usually contains less sugar than other cereals, lots of fibre, and antioxidants and even contains superfoods.

Homemade Muesli Is Easy To Make

Using a basic ratio of 4 parts grain, 1 part nuts/seeds and 1 part dried fruit, you will have a batch of the best muesli mix in a matter of minutes.

    • Measure all ingredients into a large bowl.
    • Mix thoroughly (I like to use my hands for this).
    • Store in an air-tight container until ready to use.

How simple is that? You can customize this basic ratio however you like. Continue reading for some great tips and suggestions below.

    Suggestions/Recipe Tips

    • Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free oats and grains.
    • Best oats for making muesli? I like to use old-fashioned or large flake oats. Steel-cut oats can be used, but you will have to soak them longer before eating.
    • You can change the basic ratio to suit your preference. This is one of those recipes that you cannot mess up.
    • Dried fruit adds the sweet element, so if you are looking to cut down on sugar just adjust the amount you add.
    • This lasts for a long time stored in a cool place.
    • Top it with fresh fruit.
    • Eat it hot or cold. Great for making overnight oats. If you would like to eat it warm, heat equal amounts of muesli cereal and water or milk on the stove and let simmer for 3-4 minutes. You can also do this in the microwave too. Heat for about 1-2 mintues.
    • It works well as a topper on Mocha Coffee Yogurt and parfaits too.

    Toasting Oats, Grains, and Nuts

You can easily toast your ingredients by following these simple steps:

    • Preheat your oven to 350º F.
    • Spread oats or nuts (or a combination of oats, grain, and nuts) onto a baking sheet in a thin layer.
    • Bake for about 10 minutes, stirring often so they don’t burn.
    • They are ready when they have a slight tan colour and a nice nutty aroma.
    • Cool before using.

What are some great things to add to the basic cereal mix?

    • raisins
    • cranberries
    • blueberries
    • apricots
    • cherries
    • figs
    • currents
    • dried apples
    • dried bananas
    • goji berries
    • raw dried coconut
    • powdered milk
    • nuts
    • seeds
    Berries and muesli for breakfast.
    Recipe FAQs
What is the difference between muesli and granola?

Granola is baked with added sweetener and oil and has a very crunchy texture. Large chunks can be broken apart. Muesli is not baked. It has a dry flaky texture, just like oatmeal. Generally, it is not overly sweet.

How long should you soak it?

That is a personal preference. Some people like to soak it overnight, others will soak it for only a few minutes. Experiment and find which way you like best.

    Can you eat it raw?

Yes, I like to use it as a topper for yogurt.

    Can you eat it warm?

I have never tried it this way, but people have cooked it just like you would any oatmeal.

    How long will it last?

Stored correctly, homemade muesli blend will last for a couple of months or more.
