Frozen treats don’t have to be full of sugar. These chocolate banana popsicles are easy to make and loved by kids of all ages.

Ripe bananas are the main ingredient in these healthy homemade ice pops. With the addition of peanut butter, cocoa and avocado these turn into super healthy popsicles.

Banana popsicles blended with chocolate and avocado. Easy homemade frozen treats perfect for hot summer days. Rich, creamy, and nutrient dense with no added sugar.

Do you make homemade popsicles? Once the grandchildren came along,  gramma is always looking for healthy ways to treat the kiddos. This healthy banana flavoured popsicle recipe is one of their favourites!

It’s like a fudge pop but a whole lot better. Makes me feel so good when I give them nutritious treats not full of sugar.

My grandson always asks me to make him pudding. Banana chocolate is one of his favourites. Since he loves it so much, I decided to turn it into a kid-friendly healthy popsicle, perfect for hot summer days (or any time of year).

There are so many delicious homemade popsicle recipes to make. Get creative with flavours and ingredients. Blackberry Lemon Tea Pops or Strawberry Cheesecake Popsicles are flavours you can’t buy in the store. Remember popsicles are not just for kids. Us adults like them too.

    DIY Popsicle Recipe

Ingredients ready to make banana popsicles.

With a few simple ingredients (that are a staple in most kitchens), it is really easy to make these healthy frozen banana treats.

    • ripe bananas (I even use frozen bananas)
    • avocado (fresh or frozen)
    • peanut butter (any nut butter/peanut free butter)
    • cocoa
    • milk (any kind including non-dairy)

    Making Homemade Chocolate Banana Popsicles

    • Place all the ingredients into a blender, and blitz away. You can try using a food processor or immersion blender.
    • Once you have your popsicle mixture blended, pour it into popsicle molds.
    • Place in the freezer for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Banana mixture in the blender ready to be made into popsicles.

    Suggestions / Recipe Tips

    • Milk can be replaced with kind of milk, even plant based.
    • Peanut butter can be replaced with any nut butter.
    • Cocoa powder adds the chocolate element. Feel free to use more if you like.
    • Ripe bananas work best, even ones right out of the freezer.
    • Avocado and be fresh or frozen.

If the popsicles seem stuck when trying to get them out of the mold, run the mold under hot water for about 30 seconds.

Frozen ice pops can be stored in the mold until ready to use, or you can take them out of the mold and place them in an air tight freezer bag.

With no added sugar, these frozen peanut butter banana treats are a win all around. **Hint** They are awesome breakfast popsicles.

    Best Molds For Popsicles

There are so many molds to choose from. Different sizes and shapes. I like to check they are BPA free and food safe. Here are a few to choose from (affiliate links):

    • *Zuko Classic Pop Molds
    • *Aolvo Popsicle Holder
    • *Stainless Steel Molds

Looking for more ways to incorporate bananas and avocados? Give these a try:

Smashed avocado toast is an easy recipe, perfect for any meal of the day. We often have it for dinner when I don’t feel like cooking.

Have you ever tried a healthy banana split? It is like having dessert for breakfast.

Basic Banana Bread recipe is always a hit in our house (and his). Easy to make. Simple ingredients. Moist and delicious results. Just like grandma used to make.

    Notes

These healthy popsicles are customizable. You are free to use fresh or frozen bananas (I always have some in the freezer).  I also have FROZEN avocado pieces that work well here too. Use whatever milk you like (full fat to non-dairy), and of course nut butters of all kinds work here.
    This recipe makes 4 popsicles.
***NOTE*** The size of your particular popsicle mold will determine how many you get. Also, if you have LARGE bananas, you can more milk to the mixture to thin it out a bit if it is too thick to place in the mold.
If they seem stuck when trying to get out of the mold, run it under hot water for about 30 seconds.
Frozen treats can be stored in the mold, or taken out and placed in an air tight freexer bag.

What a great idea. I often use these very same ingredients to make a smoothie. But how much nicer to have them frozen.

Run the mold under HOT water for a few seconds. It helps to easily release them.

Would love to try these. If using frozen bananas as I always have some in the freezer, what is the measurement be for two bananas?

I guess that depends on the size of the bananas. You really can’t mess this recipe up. People have actually had extra and drank it as a smoothie.

We just made these and are waiting for them to freeze but we had some of the leftover mix as a “milkshake,” and they are a big hit already! Can’t wait to try the frozen version after nap!

We love homemade popsicles! Banging the mold on the counter a few times once you pour the mix into the mold can help reduce the air bubbles — I find the trapped air and the tiny air bubbles give the popsicles a freezer burn taste much faster (although maybe all your popsicles are eaten immediately and it’s not a problem!).

YUP…just bang out the bubbles and you are good to add more mixture to the mold for sure.

These popsicles look incredibly easy to make and fudgy and full of flavor. It’s also perfect to use up all those leftover frozen bananas in! These will be delicious for a healthy snack, especially since it is still hot here!
