Almost Homemade Pizza is easy to make and so much cheaper than takeout. Customize a store bought cheese pizza, bake and enjoy!!

Close of up homemade pizza on a pizza stone, cut into slices.

We love making homemade pizza. Sometimes the pizza urge happens, and I didn’t plan ahead to make some awesome dough. The next best thing is takeout right? Wrong!! This Almost Homemade Pizza is so easy and delicious, it’s almost homemade and SO much better than takeout!

Pizza happens in this house a few times a month. It certainly is our “go to” meal, especially when we are busy all day and don’t have a lot of time to cook dinner (or I just want a break).

I must say our favourite way to make pizza is on the BBQ. It is just like having your own pizza oven. Have you ever tried a French pizza? OMG you don’t know what you are missing (providing you love olives).

However when time does not permit such gourmet delights, we have found a pretty cool alternative.

Additional pizza toppings.

Frozen pizza is ok, but not as good as takeout. Takeout is ok but really expensive. Homemade is THE BEST, but not always possible. This Almost Homemade Pizza is our solution to a homemade cheat.

Really all you have to do is buy a fresh store bought pizza and dress it up. Our absolute favourite pizza to use for this is the Costco Five Cheese Pizza. It is a HUGE pizza for a great price. We love the leftovers, and if you are having a party, this pizza will feed a crowd.

Next, we buy some pretty cool toppings to add to the pizza. Choose whatever you like. Our faves are gourmet salami’s (from the deli counter), mushrooms, olives, peppers and fresh tomatoes. It’s like a customized pizza order.

Heat up the oven. We use an Emile Henry pizza stone (affiliate link) to bake the pizza on. This is the same stone we use on the BBQ, and let me tell you it is awesome. The pizza gets a nice crisp crust, and the stone keeps it hot for a long time. Perfect for when you are going back for seconds (or thirds).

Pizza on a stone, right out of the oven.

While the oven is heating up, get your ingredients sliced and arrange them on the pizza. Bake and eat!! How easy is that? It really is the best and most tasty alternative to homemade, and once you try this, takeout pizza will be a thing of the past. Seriously you can make this pizza in the same amount of time you would wait for pizza delivery.

So there you have our homemade pizza cheat. Perfect for when the pizza craving strikes, and awesome for feeding a crowd with little effort in the kitchen and easy on your wallet.

Next pizza and movie night give Almost Homemade Pizza a try and see for yourself how delicious and easy it is.

This idea is genius! I can’t wait to try this after out next big Costco shopping trip, especially with all the yummy gourmet selections they have that would work for different topping combos.

There’s nothing I love more than a good short-cut recipe. Some judge, I say, it’s more realistic to rely on a few store made ingredients and just add some freshness to it! Great idea!
