Do you love onion rings? Do you have an air fryer? Trust me, you are going to want one. These Crispy Air Fryer Onion Rings are the bomb! Hands down the crispiest onion rings we have EVER eaten by a long shot!
Homemade onion rings are so good, especially when you make them in an air fryer. Less oil does not mean less crispy.
I have never been a “deep fried” girl. All that grease just does not sit well with me. I much prefer healthy air fryer recipes. Let’s face it, all that deep fried food is not the greatest for your health. Your heart and waistline can attest to that.
I happen to love fries and had to find another way to make them so that I could enjoy them more than a few times a year. Air fryer french fries like Crispy Spicy Fries happen a lot around here now. The perfect side to ANYTHING. Looking for a great appetizer or main dish? Fish cakes in the air fryer work well for both.
AIR FRYER ONION RINGS FROM SCRATCH
These are super easy to make. You can even prep them up to a week before you air fry them. YES, you did read that correctly. Once they are all coated, you place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (but up to 1 week). I know it sounds crazy, but it WORKS!
You will need:
- panko breadcrumbs
These are fun to make. Get the kids involved if you like (maybe not the slicing part). Once you have onions sliced and separated into rings, the rest is like an assembly line.
You will have 3 different bowls to dip and coat in. One for eggs, one for flour and one for breadcrumbs.
I seasoned each of the bowls with Frank’s seasoning. We love our food on the spicy side. Feel free to omit this if you prefer, add more if you like, or use something else altogether.
CRISPY ONION RING METHOD
Now here comes the fun (and a bit messy) part, ALL the dipping! This process involves several “dipped and coated layers”, but trust me, it is so worth the effort. These crispy onion rings are TOTALLY ADDICTIVE.
For each onion ring you will:
- dip in egg mixture
- then flour mixture
- back in egg mixture
- again in flour
- one more egg dip
- then in breadcrumbs
I know it seems like a lot, but YOU WILL LOVE this air fryer onion rings recipe. By far our FAVOURITE.
After all the dipping and coating, place your battered onion rings on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. NO, you cannot skip this step (just in case you were wondering).
COOKING ONION RINGS IN THE AIR FRYER
There are lots of different brands of air fryers on the market. Just before Christmas, hubby decided that I needed a Breville Smart Oven Air. With all the holiday cooking, you can always use an extra oven right? Well, I do love this man of mine, and he can buy me all the kitchen gadgets and appliances his big heart desires. He always says he wins since he gets to eat ALL of my creations (his words not mine). Sounds fair to me.
So after all the holiday hoopla was done, I was finally able to have some fun in the kitchen experimenting with my new toy. Yes, I did use it during the holidays for regular heating and stuff like that. This little oven can do so much more.
This oven has a mesh basket that slides into the oven. After taking the onion rings out of the freezer, I gave them a little coating of cooking spray, arranged them in a single layer and slid them into the oven.
With the “air fry setting” these onion rings cooked up in about 10-12 minutes per batch.
I will be adding LOTS more air fryer recipes on the blog. After buying some air fryer cookbooks to add to my vast collection, I have been experimenting (and eating) lots of delicious creations.
Air fryer chicken wings have been flying out of the kitchen. Still perfecting these a bit before I share the recipe with you. These crispy onion rings now have me thinking of air fryer blooming onion options. Sounds like more fun in the kitchen. I totally need to try my Crispy Baked Chicken Drumsticks in here too.
BEST ONION FOR ONION RINGS
Honestly, I don’t think there is a right or wrong onion (except for just yellow cooking onions).
- Sweet White
- Red (the variety used in this recipe)
My pickled onions are made with red onions too. Experiment and see which onion variety you like best. All will turn out delicious and super crispy air fryer onion rings. I know for sure I will be experimenting with lots of air fryer vegetables.
Well, there you have it MY FIRST AIR FRYER RECIPE on the blog. These were a HIT. Even the heated up leftovers were super crispy too!
No more soggy frozen onion rings in our house. Crispy Air Fryer Onion Rings will be our “go to” from now on.
Do you own an air fryer? If so, what brand do you have? Do you love it?
