There are loads of foods and spices that are jammed packed with healing properties. I would much rather fight a cough and cold with food than medication. We all know soup makes us feel better when we are sick. Nothing better than wrapping your hands around a nice hot bowl of pho, or mushroom soup to warm you up.
I did some searching and reading to find a better way to win the fight and yes it actually does exist. Natural cough remedies are a great alternative.

I have been suffering from a persistent cough for the last week. Finally, after trying to go to sleep with zero success for the fourth night, I decided to look something – ANYTHING – up to try to relieve this. I came upon this recipe and immediately went to the kitchen to make it. I will be honest, was not expecting the “whoa, my goodness!” moment I had when I took the first tsp. I will, however, admit that just the one teaspoon was certainly enough, for now anyway. Thank you for sharing this, it has turned out to be a very welcome “miracle.”

I’ve had a horrible cough for over 3 weeks, actually had to postpone surgery because of it. I took so many otc cough syrups and nothing worked. Last night I found this…OMG I was skeptical but this stuff works! I actually slept last night without waking up coughing my head off. Thank you so much!
M. Corey says:
It works! It did a better job than the px cough medicine given to my husband. It has a bit of a punch, so some may wish to decrease the amount of cayenne pepper added.

- If you are going to make it for kids, you might want to cut back on the cayenne, they might find it too spicy.
- *(affiliate) Ceylon cinnamon also called “true” cinnamon is a better choice than the Cassia variety found in grocery stores.

This is a great recipe! I don’t like to take medication myself (if not completely necessary) because I do believe much can be done in the kitchen. Which you have absolutely proved here. And it actually sounds pretty tasty too. I’ve seen several including garlic, and I don’t think I could manage that. And 100 days of coughing sounds horrible!
Homemade & Yummy
OMG the 100 day cough was terrible. I sure hope that does not happen this year. As for garlic…I love cooking with it, but not drinking it. I know that would not work for hubby, he hates the smell of garlic.

Homemade remedies are the best, my mom was used to make a cough syrup for us when we were sick this recipe reminded me of her. Thanks for the idea I need to bring this tradition back natural remedies are much better than medicine in many cases.

I also hate taking over the counter medicines for coughs and colds. I do like a hot toddy but this sounds more beneficial. Going to try it the next time any of us have a cough!

I am keeping this recipe in my back pocket as it gets colder. I hate when our house gets that nagging cough we can’t kick, and some relief will be so appreciated!

I hear you…we hate medication too. This is the only cough medicine we take…it works!!

One of my friends is.a nurse and she suggested something like this. I love that this is natural because it would make me feel good about giving it to my son instead of that sickening store bought syrup that never works. While I hope we don’t need this, this year…..I know where I’m coming at the first cough!
Homemade & Yummy
YES the store-bought stuff tastes terrible and actually makes me feel sick. This tastes good, works and has NO side effects.

This is great!!! I’m sure this taste way better than what’s at the pharmacy. I’m forwarding this to a friend that has been sick with a bad cold. Thanks for sharing!

This reminds me of the cinnamon, honey and lemon tea my mom used to make us when we were sick. I love the idea of the cayenne, I always add that to my chicken noodle soup along with a squeeze of lemon juice at the end. Saving this, probably will need this, we have super cold Winters here. Thanks for this!
Homemade & Yummy
This is the only cough remedy we use. It really does work. Stay healthy, but keep this in mind for those days you need come cough relief.

You are so right about many foods having healing qualities! I actually like the taste of cough syrup, but it’s expensive…and I already have all of these ingredients in my pantry. I’ll definitely make a batch of this next time I need it

This is that time of the year when the kid’s health really needs some extra care otherwise once they get a cold and cough if feels like the whole winter is ruined. It just goes on and on one after the other in turns. This is definitely going to be very helpful.
Homemade & Yummy
Yes, once this sets into the house, it can be a long season for coughs and colds. This really does work.
Lisa
I agree 100% about food being the best medicine and I really appreciate the ability to make your own cough syrup for when you’re experiencing that chest-rattling hack that we inevitably get each year. That said — I’d also be on board for a hot toddy as a good soothing remedy — and it would help me sleep too… LOL!
Homemade & Yummy
HAHAH…the hot toddy does work…but not ideal for the kids. Hope you give this natural remedy a try. Stay healthy.

I love apple cider vinegar and honey together! AND I hate all the food coloring in store bought cough syrup! I need to keep some of this on hand and just drink it all through allergy season.
