Ok…this is my FIRST time at the gourmet Food Truck Frenzy event. All I can say is “OMG”!! Have you been to one??
The 4th Annual Food Truck Frenzy was held May 27-28, 2017 at Iroquois Park. Run by the Rotary Club of Whitby, proceeds from the event help support organizations/programs in the Durham Region. For a minimal entrance fee of $2 per person, or $5 per family, what a delicious way to help out local organizations.
According to the Rotary Club of Whitby:
Four years ago the Food Truck Frenzy started simply as a local celebration of food truck fare. It has since grown into the Finest Foodie Festival in the Durham Region. The Rotary Club of Whitby combined some of the best street food from across the GTA with the best of our region’s talented food artisans and performance artists to create a vibrant, weekend long festival for families and foodies alike.
Now, let’s talk about the FOOD!! I don’t even know where to start. With over 30 food trucks, plus a handful of artisan vendors and a local brewery, if you can’t find something you like here, seriously why not??
I know, food trucks are not for everyone. They do not fit into “healthy” eating, BUT if you really want to treat yourself, this is the way to go. From poutine, tacos, ice cream, smoked meat, pizza, incredible desserts, and even gourmet coffee, your taste buds will be singing, and your pants will be a little snug.
There is a huge selection of food to choose from. Since I could not sample all of the tasty delights, I had to pick and choose carefully. Lucky for me I brought hubby along. Since we could share our food selections, we could order more right?? The answer is YES!
I started off my day taking pictures of the food trucks. Line ups were starting to form, and as soon as I saw someone carrying some awesome looking food, I ran over and asked if I could take a picture. Lucky for me I had a media badge on my neck, so they were very friendly and obliging. Glad they didn’t think I was some crazy lady.
My husband was doing his own thing, but I did give him the task of taking pictures too. Since I could not find him, I sent him a text message. Low and behold, he was having a great chat with John and Mark from Stuttering John’s, getting some great tips on smoking meat on the BBQ at home. Have you been to John’s restaurant in Courtice? I will for sure be checking it out next time I go out to dinner. They even bring the food truck to you for private events. How cool is that!! Sounds like a great party to me.
The wonderful aromas are starting to get to me. Time to start sampling some of these foods. Hard to choose, YES, but choose I must. First up (and believe me this was so hard), I decided on a sandwich from Gangster Cheese. How can you resist a BBQ Mac and Cheese Grilled Sandwich? Yup you got it. A grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with mac and cheese. Add some BBQ sauce, and you have yourself an awesome sandwich. I had a hard time sharing this one with hubby.
Alright, that was over the top crazy good. I must pace myself, I cannot eat everything here. Walk around and take more pictures. If I walk enough I can wear the calories off right? I really have to check my pedometer when I get home.
Ok, after wandering around, stopping people to take more pictures of their food, time for round 2. Since I am a seafood lover, and totally LOVE lobster, a stop at Buster’s Sea Cove was calling my name. I am trying to convince hubby that lobster is delicious. Seriously I don’t know what is wrong with him. The Lobster Arancini should do the trick. Can you believe it…he liked them. Winner, now I expect to see lots of lobster on the grill this summer!!
Luckily the weather has been good. I hate getting wet in the rain, but rain would not even stop me from lining up to sample these mouthwatering delights. I love to cook, but when I can sample so much in one place…no cooking for me today.
Next weekend we are having a family photo shoot. It is a “late” Birthday/Mother’s Day present for me. I have found my dessert at Eat My Shortbread. The Salted Caramel Brownies are to die for. I cannot wait to devour these. Now that I know they have a cafe, this will be our new found coffee shop stop.
Ok, the weather is actually heating up, even for just a few minutes. Time for something cool. I have been watching all the treats coming from Chimneys and could not resist my chance to try this out. The Chocolate & Caramel S’Mores Cone takes ice cream to a whole new level. From the unique cone, to the surprise treat at the very end, this gourmet ice cream cone is nothing like you have ever experienced before.
My pants are beginning to get snug, so unfortunately it is time for me to stop eating. Hmmm…wonder if I can fit another visit in tomorrow? There are so many more things I really want to try.
One thing for sure, I cannot wait till next year to get my Food Truck Frenzy fix. Hope you had the chance to attend this year’s event. Seriously, when you can help the community and tickle your taste buds at the same time….it’s a WIN all the way around.
Julia
