Are you a potato lover? I AM, and so is my daughter. Her favourite is potato salad, a must at her birthday celebration each year.

I love crispy cast-iron potatoes. The perfect side to brunch or dinner. Spicy potato wedges are great too.

If you are looking for the ultimate casserole, Sweet Potato Au Gratin is it. Scalloped sweet potatoes covered in a cream sauce, topped with cheese. YES, please!!

Now, when it comes to french fries, these are in a league all their own. Crispy, golden brown and soft in the middle.

Covered in ketchup, salsa or gravy. The perfect side to burgers and fish. NEVER eaten with a fork, unless you are eating Canadian poutine! These are the best crispy chips we have eaten.

RECIPE and INSTRUCTIONS for this crispy french fry recipe can be found at the bottom of this post.

Potatoes getting cut to make the spicy fries.

Ingredients Shopping List

Not many things needed for this easy recipe. You will need:

  • fresh potatoes
  • oil (I used avocado)
  • spicy seasoning
  • salt ( I used smoked sea salt)

Deep-fried french fries, certainly are an occasional treat. This crispy homemade fries recipe is the perfect alternative. Now we can enjoy them more often.

The best way to get all the crunch without all oil is by using an air fryer.

A couple of years ago I put an ActiFry on my Christmas “wish list”. I still remember my husband rolling his eyes. He was convinced we DID NOT need another “cooking thing”, as he called it. If you are a french fry lover, this cooking thing is for you!

I have some AWESOME air fryer recipes:

  • Crispy Air Fryer Onion Rings
  • Air Fryer Fish Cakes
Fries getting seasoned before cooking.

How To Make Spicy Fries

  1. Wash and cut your potatoes into sticks (you don’t even have to peel them)
  2. Toss with a bit of oil (I used avocado)
  3. Season with some spicy heat
  4. Cook in the *(affiliate) air fryer (with 1 tablespoon of oil)

Did you get that? 1 TABLESPOON of oil to make this crispy french fry recipe. How healthy is that? Added BONUS, clean up is a breeze.

Fries in the air fryer.

I can cook a batch of fries in about 22-25 minutes. If you are feeding a crowd, no problem. Heat your oven to a nice low temperature, and keep the batches warm while the rest are cooking.

A basket full of spicy fries ready to eat.

Spicy Seasonings

We love spicy foods. There are LOTS of ways to spice up your fries. Here are a few suggestions:

  • chili powders
  • cayenne
  • *(affiliate) smoked paprika
  • *(affiliate) sriracha
  • red pepper flakes
  • *(affiliate) buffalo wing seasoning
  • spicy pepper blends

You can have fun experimenting. Combine several spices to create your very homemade seasoning blend.

Crispy fry getting dunked into ketchup.

This air-fried potato recipe is a healthy alternative to deep-frying, so you can enjoy homemade french fries more often.

Try them along side Crispy Baked Chicken Drumsticks.

Smoked paprika and fries sounds like a match made in heaven to me. I’m normally a fries and ketchup kind of guy, but these feel like they’d be amazing with mayo to me (maybe that spicy mayo of yours!).

Totally with you on the potato love. And homemade air fried chips are just the best. I couldn’t believe how good they could be until I got an air fryer. And yes to coating them with some sort of chilli spice. Yum!
