Roasting Chestnuts is a seasonal treat that you can make at home. Perfect as a snack, added to stuffing or on a cheese platter.
When the holiday season rolls around, all the wonderful foods start appearing in the grocery stores. One in particular…chestnuts…can only be bought for such a short time. This year I thought I would embrace the season and try Roasting Chestnuts at home!!
It is not a difficult thing to do, although your fingers may get a little sore breaking them open. Roasted chestnuts have such a sweet creamy texture and are a great snack (which by the way you can season in so many ways), but I love adding them to a cheese tray. Very festive!!
You start by purchasing chestnuts that are dark brown and feel heavy (not hollow). FYI…be sure to buy more than you need as you will likely run into some that are not good once you crack them open.
I prefer to wash them before I roast them, since you will be handling them later and don’t want to contaminate the finished product. The most important part is to “score” your chestnuts on the rounded side. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut an “x” in the shell. This will prevent them from exploding in your oven…and you certainly don’t need that headache!!
Preheat the oven to 400º F. Place your washed and scored chestnuts into a roasting pan, and roast for about 20 minutes, or until you see the shells are opened and beginning to peel back.
Wrap the hot chestnuts in a towel to allow them to steam for about 10 minutes. This aids in the peeling process. Roll the chestnuts in the towel to try and crack the shells a bit. Now comes the hardest part…peeling!! Really you just peel the shells off the chestnuts. If the nut looks mouldy…discard and move on. Unfortunately you will find this, and cannot always tell until you are peeling them. I will say your fingers will get a workout.
You can eat the roasted chestnuts as is, season them however you like, use them in stuffing….or my favourite way…add them to your cheese platter for the perfect festive treat!!
Wishing everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
